Ivory?

Poor Tania Siyam. In a blow to all safari-suited poachers everywhere, she was busted this week for smuggling Ivory from Africa to Ohio (of all places). In an attempt to send a message to all those who would slaughter the enormous, and endangered, African Elephant... she was sentenced to five years in the federal pokey. No word on whether or not she will receive her rear-reward in the form of a Rook or a Bishop.

Siyam was indicted in U.S. District Court in Cleveland in 2004 after she shipped about 140 pounds of ivory to an Elyria artisan in 2002 and 2003. Siyam, an art dealer, didn't know the Elyria craftsman was working as an informant for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

"These are creatures that cannot be replaced," Adams said.

That they can't.

But what puzzles us more than anything is that people still want Ivory. Surely, those awful carved fire place buddha's or wild animals cannot be that desirable... And really.. Who plays chess anymore?

Apparently residents of Northwest Ohio... Which, all things considered, is not surprising.
